About
Swords to Plowshares Belltower

Swords to Plowshares Belltower is a touring memorial project dedicated by Veterans for Peace to victims and veterans of war on all sides of all conflicts. It is a part of an effort to heal ‘moral injury’ – a form of trauma involving feelings of guilt, anger and betrayal – which has been linked to an epidemic of veteran suicides.

The 24-foot-tall “shimmer tower” was created by volunteers from over a thousand recycled beer and soda cans and steel stakes that used to support young trees in an orchard planted on a Civil War training ground near Asheville, NC. The bell, uneaerthed during construction of the Church of Reconciliation in Chapel Hill, was cast in the 1880s.
